I make no money off of the people who read it, but I do make money from the advertisers who post on my blog page. I had not used Twitter a lot up to that point. It was not because I didn’t like the platform, because I actually do now that I have used it a good bit. I just didn’t know enough about it. Popularity Contest Now On DatPiffI was sitting in the library today when this guy came up. I did not know who he was, but he knew me. I had been working for a guy who emcees parties around here. He wanted to buy datpiff views and promote his mix tapes, but he needed to have a cover to go on his mix tape. It was a simple job. I did it in about an hour and a half without any difficulty. I charged the guy very little. In fact he gave me thirty bucks and a twelve pack of craft beer. He tried to argue that Pabst Blue Ribbon was a craft beer, but that was not our deal and I got him to get me a 12 pack of some really great India Pale Ale from the grocery store on Walker Avenue, they have a huge selection of really good beer on sale there.

Corporations on Social Media: Great for Consumers?

These days, companies really can’t afford not to have a social media presence. At least, that’s what they say, so I went looking to see whether I could find companies who had one. Did you know that LinkedIn has a Facebook page? That impressed me in a strange way. And of course, I was able to find behemoths like Walmart, category killers like Walgreens, and consultancies like mandrien on twitter.

Personally, I like that they’re all there. Not so much because, hey, I have a Facebook page or a Twitter account and this makes those companies Just Like Me. No, more because this means they care enough that if I wanted to talk to them, or even just was bothered enough by their service, or their competitors’, I feel like they would make a point of noticing my complaint or my interest.

It’s like complaining about a business on Yelp, but you often get even faster response times, from what I hear. For example, a friend of mine had some issue with a Walgreens pharmacy in her city. They must have had one of their customers’ phone numbers wrong, because they kept calling her whenever that other person’s prescription was ready. She doesn’t take any medication regularly, so this eventually got her annoyed enough that she mentioned it in a Tweet. Not one to Walgreens (she didn’t even know they were on Twitter), just one to her friends.

She told me that the company’s Twitter account sent her a Tweet within about 10 minutes and had the problem fixed for her later that day. It’s not remotely possible that that would happen just by writing a company anymore, is it? I don’t believe so. Heck, I was impressed that it happened at all.

If that’s the brave new frontier that companies are willing to broach when they come to Twitter and Facebook and other places that their customers hang out, I think it’s a great thing. We all deserve customer service like that, and I like to think that companies will only come to socialize with us this way if they’re prepared to give it!
